Every Minnesota angler knows that specific feeling of the first Saturday after ice-out when the air smells like damp earth and the crappies are finally moving into the shallows. And there’s another feeling we know just as well: the bone-deep chill of a 40-degree wind whipping across the lake, turning a fun morning into a test of endurance.
In Central Minnesota, "Spring Fishing" is often just "Winter Fishing" without the ice. If you want to be the first one on the bite without being the first one back at the landing with hypothermia, you need the right spots and the right rig.
Here is our guide to the best early-season action near Cokato and how to stay dry through it all.
Where to Find the Early Bite: Central MN Favorites
While the Big Lakes up north are still shedding ice, the smaller, shallower lakes in our backyard are warming up and turning on.
Clearwater Lake (Annandale)
Clearwater is a perennial favorite for a reason. Because it has several shallow, protected bays (particularly at the north end), water temperatures here can be 5–7 degrees warmer than in the main basin. Look for the black mud bottoms that soak up the afternoon sun; that’s where you’ll find the crappies stacking up.
Lake Pulaski (Buffalo)
Just a stone’s throw from our shop, Pulaski is a unique early-season gem. It is exceptionally clear and can be quite deep, but don't let that fool you in April. The northern pike and walleye often stage near the secondary points and channel swings early on.
-
Local Tip: Because Pulaski is so clear, the fish can get spooked. You’ll want to fish on those overcast, drizzly days when the low light gives you an advantage. Of course, those are also the days when you'll be glad you have a weather enclosure on your boat.
Lake Koronis (Paynesville)
Koronis is a fantastic transition lake. As the water warms, the fish move from deep holes toward the islands and emerging weed lines.
Green Lake (Spicer)
Known for its incredible clarity, Green Lake is a walleye and panfish haven. However, that clarity means the fish can also get spooked in the spring. You’ll often need to stay out a bit deeper or fish during those overcast, gloomy days, the exact kind of days where a full boat enclosure makes the difference between a limit and a cold.
The Gear: How Canvasworks Helps You Own the Shoulder Season
At Canvasworks, we believe the thermometer shouldn't dictate the fishing season. We help Minnesota anglers cheat the weather with custom solutions built right here in Cokato.
The Mobile Icehouse: Custom Enclosures
A standard Bimini top is great for shade in July, but it’s useless against a Central Minnesota Spring Spritz. At Canvasworks, we specialize in full-boat enclosures using 3D laser-measurement technology. By adding side curtains and a transition to your windshield, we turn your open fishing boat into a more climate-controlled cabin.
Dry Seats, Happy Backs: Upholstery Refresh
Nothing ends a fishing trip faster than sitting on a cold, wet sponge. If your boat seats have even tiny cracks, they’ve been soaking up melted snow and spring rain all month. The solution: Canvasworks doesn't just patch seats; we provide full upholstery repair using marine-grade, moisture-wicking materials and mold-resistant foam!
Protecting the Rig: Custom Mooring Covers
Spring in Minnesota means falling debris like pollen, oak tassels, and heavy mud from the boat launch. A custom-fit Canvasworks mooring cover ensures that when you get to the lake, you’re spending your time fishing, not scrubbing bird droppings and wet leaves off your seats, controls, and carpet.
Quick Tips for Cold-Water Success
-
Slow Your Roll: Fish are cold-blooded. In 45-degree water, they won't chase a fast spinner. Think slow and low with jigs or live minnows.
-
Watch the Wind: Fish the windward shore. The wind pushes the warm surface water (and the baitfish) toward those banks.
-
Stay Dry to Stay Safe: Damp clothes in 40-degree weather lead to rapid heat loss. Stay in your enclosure to avoid spray or rain and go back to shore if you do get wet.
